Look and See Something Beautiful-the power of Music.

LOOK AND SEE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL - THE POWER OF MUSIC

Our senses take in so much in a day and it can take a toll on our psyche.  Before long, our senses feel saturated.   We know the effect this can have on us as we can experience it every day.  Do we know however what environmental sounds are?

Let us explore this further.

We are surrounded by sounds no matter where we are.    Such sounds are known as environmental sounds.  Environmental sounds collectively make up that type of sound we call noise.  However, some environmental sounds might be described as musical, since they have some recognisable characteristic of the elements of Music such as pitch. (eg bird song).

There are a number of elements which combine to make up music. Four of these elements are Pitch, Volume, Duration and Timbre.

Want to know more about these elements?  Why not sign up for my newsletter on the home page (IP to put in link) and you will receive a free e book on this topic of the elements of Music.

Alternatively, you may wish to understand these elements even further. I explain these in detail in my Love Music Theory 1 course

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ENVIRONMENTAL SOUNDS AND MUSIC.

Music therefore is organised sounds that is, in music the sounds are planned deliberately chosen and arranged by a performer or composer.  Environmental sounds however occur by chance (accidentally or unpredictably).

Musical instruments are not the only sources of musical sounds.  Any object can produce musical sounds, as long as these sounds are organised.  Indeed, some composers have written prices which have typewriters, vacuum cleaners or garden hose trumpets as their instruments.

One delightful example is The Typewriter by Leroy Anderson.

HOW SOUND CAN AFFECT OUR EMOTIONS

Are you aware of sounds and their impact upon you?

Let me give you 2 examples of how the same sound can affect you differently at different times of the day and how it also affects other people. What we may be feeling at one point in the day is not necessarily the same as another person at that time. It is also interesting to observe ourselves in how our emotions are affected by the same object.

Photocopy Machine:

The photocopy machine is a machine to print out extra copies of what we already have. In itself, it has no emotions nor might our emotions be affected by it.

However, that same photocopy machine can affect us physically and emotionally and spiritually.

PERSON 1

Physically: Muscles may tighten

Emotionally: Feel impatient if we are needing to use it urgently.   This level of impatience may trigger anxiousness and anger.  Perhaps the anger may be towards the person using it because we do not like them for some reason. Some people will engage with their anger rather than face the reason for it

Spiritually: Emotions are in themselves neither right or wrong.  It is what we do with them that can lead us into a downward spiral.  If the person waiting for the photocopier has a vice of anger which he/she may be trying to overcome, then this opportunity to remain patient may be embraced or lost.

Association: May associate the sound of the photocopier with a migraine headache he/she has at the same time each day.

PERSON 2:

Physically: Muscles may feel relaxed and loose

Emotionally: Feel motivated because he/she feels that his/her work is in progress.   He/she may also feel pleased to need to photocopy to move away from his/her environment (desk) and uses the time waiting as an opportunity to relax recall a pleasant experience or a pleasant place (e.g. beach or holiday) and visualise it.  This will affect how he/she waits at the photocopier physically and emotionally. He/she might he/she may use this time to plan further his/her work in the mind and feel even more productive and motivated.

Spiritually: Emotions are in themselves neither right or wrong.  It is what we do with them that can lead us into a upward spiral.  If the person waiting for the photocopier chooses to wait patiently rather than responding angrily, or chooses to engage in conversation with someone he/she only sees at the photocopier, it may be an opportunity to form a friendship. It may even be an opportunity to offer a silent prayer.

Association:

Unlike person 1 who associates the photocopier with migraine headache, person 2 associates it with (a) that pleasant conversation with a colleague, or  (b) an opportunity to relax mentally and visualise something beautiful or (c)  to plan his/her work further away from the desk or (d) an opportunity to reconnect within oneself by offering a silent prayer.

EXPERIMENT TO TRY

Why not try this exercise yourself in your environment? It does not have to be a long exercise to do.

As you listen to different sounds, become more aware of your emotions   and what physical, emotional. Spiritual and associations changes that occur in you. This does not have to be a long exercise to do. The purpose is become aware of sounds and their impact upon you.

1.  Make a list of these sounds and listen to them carefully.

2.  Ask yourself what emotions do you feel when you hear these sounds. You might

like to listen to different sounds each week or even the same sounds each week.

3.  Ask yourself what changes you observe about yourself    when you hear these sounds.

BENEFITS

How did you go with this experiment?  Did you try it over a few days/ week? Were the results similar or different? What did you become aware of within yourself doing this exercise?

The benefits in doing an exercise such as suggested above is as follows:

1. To heighten your awareness of how sounds can have an impact on your emotions and to be aware of what changes this sound affects your physical, emotional, spiritual well-being.

2. The second benefit is that as you become more aware of your emotional responses, it cam flow into your relationships with other people- those whom we are close to, work colleagues, parishioners and even those whom we do not know.

3. The third benefit is that this awareness helps our senses respond more deeply to our 5 senses: sighthearing, smelltaste and touch.  The sensing organs associated with each sense send information to the brain to help us understand and perceive the world around us. Training our brain to be more acute in what we perceive is not only valuable to us physically, but for our emotional and spiritual well-being.

4. The fourth benefit is of course making us more attuned to music and what we hear in it.  As our listening becomes more finally attuned, so will our capacity to appreciate the various levels of music. We will be able to distinguish the various elements of music and how they interact with each other. This then can provide even further enjoyment whether we are at a concert or at home or in the car.

For example:

Listening to Highlander Cathedral played at Andre Rieu concert in Melbourne in November 2018 where I was present.  Here is the link of this piece of music- Highlander Cathedral when it was performed live in Maastricht. The performance here is different from what I experienced at the Melbourne Concert.

Sight: Being present at the concert helped me to see visually the number of musicians involved in playing this piece.  There were Johann Strauss orchestra (Andre Rieu’s orchestra) along with 30 Bagpipers.  Added to this, there was one member of the orchestra who was playing the solo line of music in this piece.

Seeing the bagpipers enter the stadium in procession added to the anticipation of what was to be played. It prepared the ears for more listening.

Hearing: A person who is less acute in his/her listening may respond to this piece (or any piece of music) as hearing it in an overall sense.

A more finely attuned person will listen to all the strands of the music individually whilst still enjoying the overall piece of music.

I have to say that initially I tuned into the solo bagpipe line of music but throughout it, I realised visually that the orchestra were also playing.  I then mentally switched my hearing to the orchestral line in the music whilst still enjoying the overall piece of music. Exploring what the orchestra were playing with my ears added another layer of enjoyment to the experience.  Then I switched my listening to the 30 bagpipers to follow their line.

My point is this, I was able to enjoy this wonderful performance by using my senses.  Although my senses of smell, taste and touch were not tapped into in a literal sense, I was also able to tap into these senses by smelling, tasting and touching the Scottish scene through visualisation.

This then culminated in my emotions being able to be accessed at a deeper level as my eyes welled up listening to it and my heart responded with its own unique flutter of satisfaction.

I also listen to this piece of music when I lack motivation or are feeling tired. All of a sudden, I feel my creative juices flowing again and that lag in enthusiasm and motivation fades very quickly.

In summary therefore, our senses are there to provide awareness of how sounds have an impact on your emotions We need to become aware of what changes theses sounds/pieces of music affects your physical, emotional, spiritual well-being

 LEARNING STYLES AND MUSIC.

The other aspect to consider is that each of have a favoured way of learning. It may be visual, aural, verbal, physical, logical, social, and solitary. To learn more about these styles of learning, click here

I am an aural learner.  My highly developed skill of listening through my learning of music and teaching it (piano, music theory, singing and organ) leads me even in conversation to hear the words at a deeper level. This is particularly helpful in a counselling/ life issues conversation. You hear what is spoken and what the heart wishes to say and yet to express.

For the visual person, they will naturally look and see the world around them- the sense of sight is also well developed and they see through a lens of sight whereas an aural learner will ‘’see’’ through the lens of hearing. For example a photo well taken can be a work of art as compared to just a photo. Same photo but the keen eye of the photographer and his/her senses culminate into that final click of the photo.

In the example above at Andre Rieu’s concert in Melbourne, I naturally leaned to my natural learning style of hearing before I accessed my visual and other learning styles. One or two styles will be more highly attuned than the others and will be our natural subconscious choice.

Another piece of Music which touches me is ‘’The Prayer’’ by Andrea Bocelli.  This performance is by Celin Dion and Josh Gruban.

Listening to this piece of music affects my emotions because of the synchronicity of both performers. Yes, both musicians are good performers individually, but it takes another level of being in touch with each other as performers to convey this to the audience. For me, this level of synchronicity brings this beautiful song to another level where I can also feel that synchronicity within myself. I listen to it but unlike a lot of other music, I do not use my hearing as my first choice of connection.

The great news is we can develop all our senses and learning styles further and use them to enjoy our experiences more.   Here at talkingmusic.online you will notice that the tagline is ‘’ Love life and learn music’’.   It encompasses the power of music and its connection to our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.

Check out my pin on this topic on Pinterest.

Listening to Music is definitely soothing and can be exhilarating too, yet it does not have the same physical input as actually playing and singing.  Yet, in listening to Music our hearing can be engaged.  Can be?  I say can be because we are often bombarded with Music around us and we can easily tune out to it. We need to be actively listening when we are listening to Music. It is a definite mental choice and decision just as we choose not to listen or to tune out to what we do not want to hear.

Understanding Music is essential, so I always teach Music Theory from day 1.  Being able to understand what is on the written page is important in being able to interpret and to put our own stamp on how it is played. Knowing its meaning and why symbols are there is vital, as these are signs/symbols which communicate more about the music.  We cannot speak without knowing our alphabet nor can we read.  In music, learning Music Theory is, in my view essential from the first music lesson.  It opens the student up to the language of Music. Listening to Highlander Cathedral played at Andre Rieu concert in Melbourne in November 2018 where I was present.  Here is the link of this piece of music- Highlander Cathedral https://www.facebook.com/andrerieu/videos/highland-cathedral/10156134804277425/ when it was performed live in Maastricht.

To learn more about these styles of learning, click here   https://www.learning-styles-online.com/overview/

Another piece of Music which touches me is ‘’The Prayer’’ sung by Andrea Bocelli.  This performance is by Celin Dion and Josh Gruban. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbviXG_56ss

Listening to this piece of music affects my emotions because of the synchronistic approach of both performers.

The purpose is become aware of sounds and their impact upon you

I explain these in detail in my Love Music Theory 1 course   https://app.ruzuku.com/courses/27638/edit

One delightful example is The Typewriter by Leroy Anderson. http://www.last.fm/music/Leroy+Anderson/_/The+Typewriter

Here is the link of this piece of music- Highlander Cathedral https://www.facebook.com/andrerieu/videos/highland-cathedral/10156134804277425/ when it was performed live in Maastricht.
